Define the observations
A solar campaign should distinguish resource characterisation from operating-plant monitoring. Define the required irradiance quantities, meteorological observations, instrument locations and recording intervals with the assessment team. The selected sensors and station configuration should serve those requirements.
Consider exposure and ongoing care
Station siting, horizon obstruction, levelling, alignment where applicable, cleanliness and maintenance records affect interpretation. In a remote setting, access for inspection and instrument care should be planned together with the power and communications system. Agree which activities are performed remotely and which require a field visit.
Document calibration and configuration
Retain instrument identification, calibration information, station configuration and any changes made during the campaign. Review time-series data for gaps and unusual behaviour. Where several observation sources are used, document how site measurements relate to other resource inputs instead of treating them as interchangeable.
Define the assessment handover
Agree the expected data format, QA/QC outputs, service records and interpretation scope. Resource and energy-yield assessment also depend on modelling assumptions beyond the station itself. The campaign should provide clear observations and records so those assumptions can be reviewed.
EnviroMET support
EnviroMET supports solar-station configuration, instrumentation, installation, maintenance and resource assessment. The supplied company references include operation and maintenance of a solar sensor network. Share the site, project stage, required observations and assessment purpose to define a relevant scope.
Common planning questions
Which solar sensors should be selected?
Selection depends on the irradiance quantities and assessment objectives, together with the intended accuracy, station configuration and maintenance plan.
Why keep cleaning and inspection records?
They help analysts relate changes in observations to instrument condition and field activity, and make the measurement history easier to review.
This guide explains planning considerations. The project scope determines applicable technical requirements, deliverables and responsibilities.
