LiDAR deployment in remote environments

Treat LiDAR as a field campaign, not only a device.

EnviroMET technical editorial · Published 10 October 2026 · Planning guidance

Confirm the use case and site

Remote sensing can support wind-resource and other measurement objectives, but the deployment must suit the terrain, measurement heights and assessment requirements. Confirm the exact device, configuration, performance-verification arrangements and the boundaries of the planned analysis before mobilising equipment.

Design around the operating load

Remote deployments need power for the instrument and its supporting equipment, including communications and any site-monitoring system. Define the equipment load, autonomy objective, expected site conditions and maintenance access before choosing solar panels, batteries or other power components. A power budget should include operating assumptions and realistic recovery arrangements.

Keep access, telemetry and verification connected

Installation records, configuration history, remote telemetry and planned performance checks help the assessor understand the observations. Agree how missing data, communication outages and potential instrument issues will be identified and handled. Loss of a telemetry link is not necessarily loss of locally stored measurements, but the actual behaviour depends on the configured system.

Prepare the campaign record

Confirm the records to be delivered: deployment location, device configuration, applicable verification material, power and service logs, QA/QC outputs and the agreed data package. IEC 61400-50-2 provides the relevant measurement framework for ground-mounted vertical-profiling remote sensing; compliance requires the campaign-specific requirements to be established and followed.

EnviroMET support

Our LiDAR scope connects deployment, field power, communications, maintenance coordination and data review. The supplied profiles document a three-device, three-site ZX300 reference. That specific project demonstrates a documented scope; it does not imply that one device or measurement range suits every new site.

Common planning questions

Can LiDAR replace a met mast?

It depends on the project objective, terrain, verification requirements and the assessment framework. The choice should be established for the particular campaign.

Is every LiDAR range the same?

No. Usable heights, configuration and performance depend on the selected device, site and required quality criteria. Confirm them in the specification.

This guide explains planning considerations. The project scope determines applicable technical requirements, deliverables and responsibilities.
